~~~~~~~I Spy quilt for Village of Hope-Guatemala, 2013.
I first heard about A Village of Hope-Guatemala through a blog that I had been following, Margaret's Hope Chest (http://margaretshopechest.blogspot.com.) Margaret was Carin Vogelsang's grandmother who was killed by an assault in a grocery store parking lot. Carin turned this tragedy into tangible projects for healing. She had been distributing donated quilts to children of prisoners for several years, and I made a few quilts for this hopeful project. Later she asked for quilt donations that would be taken to a new facility in Guatemala for orphaned and at-risk children. In 2013 I donated this I Spy quilt to Carin and she was able to take it and 22 other quilts to brighten up A Village of Hope in San Lucas, Guatemala.
As a supporter and follower of the homes' leaders, Amy and Todd Block, I recently asked if they were in need of more quilts for their residents or others in their community. They now have 38 residents. With a resounding, "YES" I began my Yo Espero/I Hope project. I have asked for donations of blocks, preferably 12-1/2" quilted blocks with unfinished edges, that will be joined together quilt-as-you-go style. I have since been open to donations of any size blocks, leftover blocks, and unfinished projects. 'It's all good' and can be repurposed into colorful expressions of comfort.
UPDATE: So far about 20 blocks were donated from members of my quilt guild. I have a long way to go to provide quilts for each of the residents.
Quilters always have a few blocks that just don't fit in. If you would like to donate those pieces cluttering up your stash, please comment and we can correspond by email.
Thank you in advance.
Did you know? It is estimated that there are more than 370,000 orphans in Guatemala and at least 5,000 children live on the streets of the capital, abandoned by mothers who are too poor to keep them. In addition, the HIV/AIDS epidemic appears to be growing rapidly. External adoptions from Guatemala were closed in 2007. This is a country with severe poverty, high infant mortality, and exploitation and violence, especially towards children. There are so many in desperate need. Please pray for them and consider supporting them in some way.
"Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause." Isaiah 1:17
