My mother enjoyed books and magazines and spent every free moment devouring them. In the '50s and '60s Women's Day, Family Circle, and Southern Living were our go-tos for crafts. Every Christmas we picked at least one new project, usually an ornament. Mother was a teacher so she had lots of crafting supplies on hand. We hardly ever had to buy many new items for creating things like beaded candy canes, crocheted stockings, paper snowflakes, or cotton ball Santas.
This star ornament we refer to as "the ugly angel" is one of my favorites. We started with 2 cardboard squares cut from cereal boxes. The squares were rotated to make 8 points. Then we wrapped braid, string, or ribbon around in a weaving type pattern to cover all the points. When we saw this "lovely" angel in a magazine I knew she just had to adorn my star. Mother and I laughed about it until we cried.
This ornament has been on our Christmas tree every year, well over 50 years now. It still brings me joy and I consider making it with mother a real treasure from my childhood.
"His angel guards those who honor the Lord
and rescues them from danger." Psalms 34:7
