Last Friday was my mother's 2nd heavenly birthday. I'm still trying to adjust to the loss. Today's treasure is memories with mom -
of hugs,
laughs,
inside jokes,
shopping trips,
craft days,
trips to the Appalachian mountains and Hawaiian beaches,
church hymns on the piano,
sharing a new magazine,
having cinnamon toast and a cup of tea or a rootbeer float,
standing amazed watching God's sunsets,
and praying together before bed.
Mother is so much a part of my life, my thoughts, and my behavior, still.

Because of Mother...I can't look at a flowering weed without enjoying it's beauty...Beetles and spider webs can be observed with wonder...Creating a specially designed personalized gift for a friend brings me great joy...Pondering ways to reuse envelopes, ribbon, and plastic bags seems quite normal...Giving to those in need comes naturally.
We worked together a few years ago when she was about 93 on her first quilt. She had sewn clothing and home dec. items all her life, but never a quilt. She wasn't totally on board with the idea, but as per her usual "can do it" attitude, we forged on. I chose a log cabin variation and precut a variety of strips. She loved Christmas and red and green so this was our theme. Using her old portable Singer, she carefully sewed the logs together. We worked in no rush over several days and she was so proud of her accomplishment. I later layered and quilted it and added a label with both our names. We had already decided to donate it to Wrap Them in Love, a group in Mt. Vernon, WA that sends quilts to children in need around the world.
This was such a special memory of being with Mother. It's a treasure.
